This post is meant to be both an announcement as well as sharing of a philosophy. In the next few weeks we will be adding a daily noon class at Motor City CrossFit. Jen Locher will be picking up the 3 open noon times as she begins training people for the first time. Jen has expressed to us a desire to train and has shown initiative to become a trainer by getting certified and attending several assessment and intro sessions with me over the past few months. (She has also been a member of MCCF since the beginning). As a result, we have decided to give her a shot at doing something she loves. She approached US with the desire as have all other MCCF trainers before her.
This is one of the more important things we look for in a trainer at MCCF. We simply will not hire trainers from the outside. Somebody could walk into our gym with a 2 minute ‘Fran’ and a resume that may say (on paper) that you are the greatest trainer in the world! That’s great! But it’s also secondary to what we actually look for. I spent the better part of 10 years in corporate HR. One of the things I learned was that education DOES NOT always = smart. And experience DOES NOT always = proficiency. Our trainers will all become members of our community prior to running any classes. It doesn’t matter if you are Jillian Michaels or Chris Spealler or, well Ok – We may give Chris a shot :-), but that’s about it. People need to ‘fit’ with our group – they need to be respected and they also need to do things a certain way. They will need to have a passion for training AND CrossFit. They must also have a desire to help our members achieve their goals.
Nobody off the street, regardless of education/experience is going to know what Susan’s right knee does when she squats, they won’t know Kari has limited shoulder flexibility or that Pat used to be a rock climber. This is only something that can be learned as a result of membership. There are certain qualities I want our trainer to possess. Yes. It’s really important that they are able to move a certain way and demonstrate the CF Foundational movements as well as a few others. But the only non-negotiable requirement is that they care deeply about what they are doing, along with knowing and caring about our members. And as long as they are willing to learn, we’ll be there to help them along the way.

Sincerely,
JD
