Seems weird I know…hang tight for a few.
I was going through my old PC and I came across a picture of my old Audi S4. It was pretty bad ride! Ricaro leather seats, 300+ HP, sounded cool – all the bells and whistles. You know what I’m saying. I got all kinds of looks from people. Sometimes I would get a look from another guy wanting to race or whatever – I never did just because I figured I’d get nailed by the police. But I did punch it from time to time. It was a fun car to be sure.
I started thinking today though when I saw that picture, how my behavior has changed. Back then, I would make 100% sure that I got to the car wash before they closed on Friday night. I always wanted to keep it shiny and looking new. I even remember after I got it cleaned when I would be driving home I’d actually wait til I got home to eat the Taco Bell I picked up in the drive through. Back then I was in the prime run of my sugar/alcohol fueled 20’s without a care in the world about what was happening to me inside and out. So yeah…my 240+ pound ass was driving around in a beautiful red 50 thousand dollar Audi S4…but I couldn’t make it up a flight of stairs without breaking a sweat. Come to think of it, I don’t even think I took the stairs back then.
I think that part of the reason I leased that car was because of what it represented. I guess I hoped people would think I was ‘cool’ driving it around. I don’t know – but what did people really think? Did they think “WOW”! Look at that car?? And then when I got out of it they were like “Of course – look at him, how sad”? I was extremely overweight, sick, smoked, ate bad, drank too much – but had a nice car! Hilarious…
Back then, I honestly think there were years at a time when I absolutely did not make a conscious decision to do anything healthy. Like, put it this way – I went many years where I didn’t even try to eat a vegetable or piece of fruit because it was good for me! I would occasionally eat fruits and vegetables but it was usually on accident. My wife would buy/eat fruits and vegetables but I kind of avoided that stuff – I guess I didn’t want to waste space for the pizza or something!
Fast forward a few years – I just don’t think that way anymore. I mean, I went to Costco today and all I bought was spinach, frozen berries and bell peppers. Not a day goes buy that I don’t decide to make healthy choices. I guess they aren’t really choices as much as how I behave now but, I hope you get my point. If in the last year you’ve thought about cleaning out your car, shining it up, buying armor all, getting a newer fancier model or whatever and all the while have been unhappy with how you look and feel. You may need to take a step back and take a look at your proiorities. Not everybody is perfect and I try not to be judgemental but I think it’s reasonable to say that you should spend more time/money keeping YOU looking and running good over your CAR! No?
I’ll take a dirty Ford Escape filled with empty coffee cups over my beautiful S4 full of empty Taco Bell bags every time…
P.S. Baumann’s don’t count! I don’t think I’ve ever seen them with a dirty car.

Great blog once again J.D. I do have to disagree though. My Avalanche is constantly dirty from this winter/salt crap although Amy’s Escape is kept a bit cleaner than my truck. LOL, but nothing compares to yours.
Way to go JD…..love it when you blog like this……stuff that makes people think, and ask questions, and challenge the status quo…..
Good story JD. I know a ton of people that need to read this. Makes too much sense for people not to get it.
Good post brother…ya know, you think most of the Harley guys like to spend 20-35 grand on a bike???? it because its instant satisfaction and status….people looked at your car before and now they look at your fran time and are envious…you have invested in peoples lives and it has brought a huge return…you now have an extended family that will last for a lifetime…so that being said, Hey PFP…why dont ya let JD take out that Audi you got sitting in your driveway…since you guys are brothers and all…and hey, while youre at it “brother” I think I’ll take out the Harley when I get back too!
Take care all…lotsa love
T-Bone
Great post JD! It’s all about what you value. Those who don’t value their health now will eventually travel any distance and pay any price to get it back when they loose it. You never spend on your health, you invest. Your $150 a month now will save you between $300,000 and $400,000 in your lifetime…..Fact! If you don’t have the time and/or money to be healthy, you WILL have to have at least 10x as much of both to be sick. Thanks for the investment opportunity boys!
Hey T-bone, any time your up for a ride it’s all yours. Wish I could borrow your deadlift numbers or some of JD’s benchmark WOD times too. That’s the shit we all aspire to. Wish I could be there this weekend for the OCCF games to cheer on my MCCF team but best of luck. Hey Popeye! Try to keep your engorging to a minimum!
Thanks guys!
