Just wanted to send out a note and talk a little bit about the group class and what it means to us. It’s how we all started, it’s what made us fall in love with CrossFit. It made us fitter, stronger, faster, leaner and more coordinated. It introduced us to our way of being healthy, taught us the value of teamwork and helped build friendships that will last a lifetime. It’s very important for me (and Motor City CrossFit) That the group dynamic stays strong and enables this to happen for the forseeable future.
That being said, once we get a bit of experience our goals begin to change, or at least get a bit more focused – and this is what caused the strength classes and 5/3/1 program to be created. This is great! Few things we want to remember though…
Please try to get in your strength work during the available times if possible.
1. We have the strength classes and open gym time for you to get in your lifts.
2. We have several classes per week where there is a strength component prior to the group WOD.
3. The instructor usually arrives 10 – 15 mins prior to class. Get there a bit early and you should be able to get your 5/3/1 in with no issues.
Keep this in mind when planning your week. A few things we want to avoid are…
1. Rouge training sessions (groups of people that go off and do their own WOD’s (best judgement to be used here, if you’re going to do skill work or work a weakness that’s fine, just be mindful of how things look.) It shouldn’t look as if there is another class going on.
2. Strength work interfering with the group classes. Try to stay out of the way, get your work done and go about your day. If there is a group class that should be the focus of the gym. It also takes priority over everything else.
3. Cherry picking – Some people (for whatever reason) may walk in and see a WOD on the board and decide that this is the day they’re supposed to do ‘shoulder press’ instead of ‘Filthy 50’ or ‘Fran’ or something.
We obviously cannot make everybody happy and accommodate all schedules but we do the best that we can. We will expand classes as we grow and there is trainer availability. Please just remember back when you started…How you got hooked and what made coming to the box so exciting. It was the group class…let’s keep that in mind, keeping Motor City CrossFit what it is.
Please talk to one of the instructors if you have any questions.
Thank you!

Well said JD! I agree 🙂 the ‘group,’ at times, is my only motivation.
I remember showing up at Matt’s garage…hoping and praying that maybe Vinny…or Ryanne would be there. And when they were, I would get my ass kicked – unless it was back squats :-). But it was fun for sure and the group is the reason we are what we are today. And one thing is for sure – we have an unbelievable group of people…
Heck, in the first few weeks, I remember sitting in my garage 5 minutes after class, hoping someone would show up for class that day at all… 🙂
